Empowering Women Through Education: Winthrop University’s Panhellenic Council and Circle of Sisterhood
The Circle of Sisterhood Foundation (CofS) is a mechanism by which sorority women can stand together as one community to help improve the lives and livelihood of girls and women worldwide by removing barriers to education. In a world where education is often a privilege rather than a right, organizations like CofS stand as beacons of hope, working tirelessly to dismantle barriers to education for women and girls worldwide. Through the CofS grant awards program and a school build program, we are able to support organizations working worldwide who are actively removing barriers to education for girls and women.
Today’s sorority women understand and appreciate others on a global scale, realizing they have the collective influence to make a difference for those experiencing marginalization and oppression. Recently, Winthrop University’s Panhellenic Council received recognition for their exceptional dedication to this cause, underscoring their commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
We had the privilege of speaking with Talia Hayes, the Vice President of Philanthropy for Winthrop University’s Panhellenic Council, to delve deeper into their impact with CofS and their recent accolade.
The Panhellenic Council at Winthrop University was honored with the Organization with Exemplary Record of Service award for the Spring 2024 semester. This recognition highlights their outstanding efforts in contributing to both their campus community and the philanthropic endeavors of CofS.
“Our main initiative was our Circle of Sisterhood week,” Talia explained. “Throughout this week, our focus was to engage our Panhellenic community and educate them about why we support this cause.”
From engaging fundraising events like Trivia Night to enlightening discussions during the Circle of Sisterhood Educational Brunch, the council spearheaded activities aimed at rallying support and raising awareness.
When asked why the Panhellenic Council chose to support Circle of Sisterhood, Talia emphasized the sense of responsibility they feel towards empowering women worldwide. “As college students, we were all granted the privilege to work towards a higher education. We believe it’s important to extend this privilege to other young girls and women around the world.”
This sentiment reflects a deep understanding of the transformative power of education and a commitment to fostering equality and opportunity for all.
The impact of the Panhellenic Council’s involvement with CofS extends beyond their sorority community. By championing this cause, they have inspired greater engagement in service and philanthropy across their campus.
“Our Circle of Sisterhood week was a huge success,” Talia shared. “We raised significant funds and educated our campus community on what Circle of Sisterhood is all about.”
Their efforts not only bolstered financial support but also amplified awareness through social media, expanding the reach of their advocacy efforts.
As they reflect on their achievements, the Panhellenic Council remains steadfast in their commitment to Circle of Sisterhood’s mission. Talia expressed their collective aspiration to deepen their partnership and explore new avenues for collaboration.
“We hope to get involved even more and work together on more hands-on endeavors for the organization,” she remarked. “Our goal is to continue supporting Circle of Sisterhood in their mission to provide education to women around the world.”
The story of Winthrop University’s Panhellenic Council serves as a poignant reminder of the impact that collective action and unwavering dedication can have in advancing gender equality and educational opportunities. As we celebrate their achievements, let us also heed their call to stand in solidarity with women and girls everywhere, ensuring that education remains a beacon of hope and empowerment for generations to come.
