How We Work To Remove Barriers of Education – Volume 3, Episode 8: She’s The First
Removing Barriers for Girls in India
The latest episode of the Circle of Sisterhood’s monthly vlog series is here! In 2012, a $1,600 Circle of Sisterhood grant supported an inspiring initiative in Bangalore, India, that continues to demonstrate how education can change lives.
The grant was awarded to She’s the First to sponsor a comprehensive year of education for a student at the Shanti Bhavan School. This support covered room, board, clothing, medical expenses, and all school supplies—ensuring one girl from a marginalized community had the chance to learn and thrive in a safe, supportive environment. Beyond her studies, she stepped into leadership by sharing her voice at a global summit, showing how education empowers girls to become agents of change.
About She’s the First
She’s the First is a global nonprofit partnering with grassroots leaders to ensure girls everywhere are educated, respected, and heard. With programs across 62 countries, they support girls through mentorship, education, and activism training—equipping them to advocate for themselves and their communities.
At the heart of their work is a commitment to systems-level change. By strengthening girl-led chapters and women-run organizations, She’s the First is building long-term support networks that enable girls not just to stay in school, but to grow into confident leaders and changemakers.
The 2012 Circle of Sisterhood grant to She’s the First did more than fund a year of school—it created a ripple effect of opportunity, resilience, and leadership. In a country where over 30% of girls drop out before completing secondary school and child marriage remains a threat, this kind of support can mean the difference between a life of limitation and one of empowerment.
