Grantee Spotlight: GirlForward

colorskylinehome3Looking ahead to 2013, Circle of Sisterhood is proud to announce our support of GirlForward, a non-profit organization based out of Chicago, Illinois that serves adolescent refugee girls. GirlForward is the first organization of its kind, working to provide these young women with individual mentorship, educational programs and leadership opportunities, creating a community of support that serves as a resource and empowers girls to be strong, confident, and independent.

The $5,000 grant that GirlForward is receiving will go directly to their Camp GirlForward program. This program is an intensive summer education program that includes English, math and computer courses, while also incorporating enrichment activities and field trips around Chicago. The aim of the program is to “foster confidence and leadership skills among refugee girls  ages 14-19.” Participants are given a summer Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Pass that allows them to travel across Chicago, as well as meals and school supplies for the entire summer.

Circle of Sisterhood is proud to announce that because of this $5,000 award to this program, 20 girls will be able to fully participate in Camp GirlForward in the summer of 2013.  A huge thank you goes out to all of our campus and alumnae donors in 2012 who helped make this grant possible.

Blair Brettschneider, the founder and Executive Director of GirlForward is an alumna of the Gamma Delta chapter of Alpha Delta Pi at the University of Miami. We are proud to support this sorority woman and GirlForward on their mission to provide education and support to refugee girls.
